Old Cornwall Society Homepage
 Anyone interested in the heritage of Cornwall, from the very youngest upwards, is a welcome member of St Gerrans & Porthscatho Old Cornwall Society (Charity No: 247283). In the name ‘Old Cornwall’, the “Old” refers to the past culture, history, arts, customs, language etc. and has nothing to do with the age of the membership.
The first Old Cornwall Society was formed at St Ives in 1920 and since that time Societies have developed throughout Cornwall under the auspices of the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies who are determined to uphold the words written by Morton Nance to work to protect… “all those ancient things that make the spirit of Cornwall - its traditions, its old words and ways, and what remains to it of its Celtic language and nationality”.
A very small group formed St Gerrans & Porthscatho Old Cornwall Society in 1976, but since that time the Society has grown considerably. The Society meets at the Memorial Hall, Portscatho, which has wheelchair access and a ‘hearing loop’, at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month (from October to May) when a speaker, usually with slides or a PowerPoint presentation, talks on a Cornish subject.
In the summer, a “pilgrimage” is made to a place of “Old Cornwall” interest, often to unique properties such as Cullacott, a 15 century Medieval Hall House (illustrated), near Launceston, where we enjoyed a private conducted tour by the owners.
