Roseland Online Breaks All Records Again
02.02.12: Roseland Online, once again yesterday, broke all records for hits and user visits. The ever popular community website reached a massive 18,161 hits in just one day with 453 unique visitors joining our ever growing readership.
Editor, Mark David Hatwood, said, "I am astonished and proud that Roseland Online is supported like this in ever growing numbers; it must mean we're doing something right!"
Roseland Online's numbers just go from strength to strength with around 10 - 15% growth per month and has been growing this way since its inception in June 2009. 2011 alone saw a total of over 2 million hits with well over 70,000 unique visitors looking at over 160,000 pages of content and this was almost double that of 2010 on most numbers.
Mark added, "At this rate we'll reach the magical 20,000 hits in one day within two months and break the 500 barrier of unique visitors per day, which is amazing. What I'm most grateful for, though, is the emails of support I've recieved from our readers. As all profits go back into the community, we're well on track to be able to give back to the people who support us and the new Roseland Online Shop is just such a way readers can get something beautiful and local for their friends and family whilst supporting the website, which in turn supports them. A win"win scenario for all, so thanks, folks!"
We'll keep you updated with all our successes and already Roseland Online looks on track to be able to offer even more services to South Central Cornwall next month, so watch this space for more detials on those.
Census Scam Warming from DCPA
31.01.12: The Devon and Cornwall Police have circulated a Census scam warning from the Director of the 2011 Census, Glen Watson, which states:
We are aware that an email entitled 'Population Census: a message to everyone - act now' is being circulated, allegedly in the name of National Statistician, Jil Matheson. This email demands individuals provide further personal information, supposedly for the Census and threatens fines for non-compliance.
This email is a scam and a hoax. It has no connection whatsoever with the National Statistician, the 2011 Census or the Office for National Statistics.
We believe the links in the email could download malware to any computer where the user clicks on the links. This could put your personal data, including financial information, at risk.
Anyone receiving this, or similar emails, should delete them, not open any links and certainly not provide any information.
For more information on how to protect yourself from this type of threat, please see www.getsafeonline.org
If you wish to, please report receipt of any such suspicious emails to www.actionfraud.org.uk ONS takes the protection of personal census information extremely seriously. Collection of census data was completed last year and no further requests will be forthcoming from the Office for National Statistics relating to the 2011 Census.
N.b.: It is worth noting that although this warning is real, 99% of scam and virus warnings are fake. If you want to be sure of whether a scam or virus warning is true before passing it on and perpetuating its circulation, you can enter some of the details of the email, or its subject line, into the search engine of the following website and it will confirm its authenticity for you: www.snopes.com
Superfast Broadband Petition Group for Roseland
27.01.12: A small group of people working with Roseland Online is putting together a bid to get Superfast Broadband to the Roseland before its expected arrival of 2014. The group is initially asking interested residents and businesses to proclaim their interest in the initiative by sending an email to us via Roseland Online editor, Mark David Hatwood; mark@Roseland-Online.co.uk
Mark said, "At this stage all we're asking interested parties to do is let us know they would support the initiative. This won't mean they have to buy it once it's here, just that they would like their name to be added to the petition to get it brought to the Roseland sooner than expected."
Superfast Fibre Optic Broadband can deliver speeds between 40Mbps - 100Mbps which is massively higher than the maximum of 8Mbps only a few of us enjoy. The majority here see somewhere around 2-4Mbps, so the increase would be huge.
Mark added, "I sent out an email this evening and within seconds had 30 replies, so this is certainly of interest to residents and businesses. so I'm hopeful that if we can increase this by tenfold, then the people who make the decisions would certainly take notice of our desires. Chasewater were one of the first because they did exactly this, so with everyone's help, we can make this happen... or at least give it a good try!"

St Just Heritage Asks for Help With Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
25.01.12: The St. Just and St. Mawes Heritage Group are putting on a special exhibition as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations this summer. The exhibition will be entitled “Royal Visits” and will be held in The Millennium Rooms, St Mawes over the Jubilee weekend Friday June 1st, 2nd, 3rd, finishing on Tuesday June 5th.
Can you help? The heritage group need to borrow any photographs or memorabilia from any royal visit to this area in past history. If you are able to date and name any of the people in the photos, too, that would be a bonus for them. They intend to then scan and enlarge photos for the exhibition and return the originals to their owners in ‘mint condition’. So, to help them out, why not have a rummage around in your old albums, drawers and cupboards to see if you have any items to contribute. And if you have anything, the person to contact is Dawn Andrews on 01326 270117 or Chris Williams on 01326 270 379. They send their thanks in advance!
Roseland Shot Film Shortlisted for Oscar
17.01.11: A short film shot on the Roseland in 2010 has been shortlisted for an Oscar.
John Hurt, who starred in many of the Harry Potter films, played one of the main roles in 'Sailcloth' which was filmed in St Mawes in May 2010. Written and directed by Elfar Adalsteins, the 17-minute film follows an elderly gentleman who absconds from a nursing home by setting in motion events that veil his disappearance. He heads to the local pier, where an old companion awaits him, ready for their last great journey. Surprisingly, Hurt has no lines in the film, but it has become one of ten shortlisted in the Live Action Shorts category in this year’s Oscar.
This Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will select between three to five nominees from among those shortlisted and will announce the finalists for the 84th Academy Awards nominations on January 24, ahead of the ceremony on the end of 26th February.
While he shot the film, Roseland Online editor, Mark Hatwood, bumped into John on the harbour. He told us, “I just love the Roseland. It's a stunning location and the hotel Tresanton is looking after us wonderfully."

Cornwall Air Ambulance's Airport Charity Run
12.01.12: Cornwall Air Ambulance is urging South Central Cornwall residents to get involved in their ‘Runway Runaround” on 25th March at Newquay Airport. This one-off fund raising event to help raise funds for this much needed charity is a 10k run around Newquay Airport, taking in their new hangar building, the runway and the terminal buildings, and there’s a 4km run for those who don’t think they can make the bigger one. It’s a unique opportunity to take part in a never-before fundraising event airside at Newquay Airport.
CAA Projects Officer & eTail Coordinator, Nicole Hawkesford, told Roseland Online, “The run is suitable for people of all ages and abilities and while there are some serious sportspeople taking part we’re also encouraging families and people who just want to have a go to join in – you can even run it in fancy dress if you fancy it! – and the route is also suitable for wheelchair users.”
Entry costs £12 ahead of the day (£15 on the day) for the 10k option, and £5 in advance or £6 on the day for the 4k option. However, they are asking entrants to raise as much sponsorship as possible – and there will be a price for the individual and the organisation who raises the most sponsorship money! The run is also ARC (Association of Running Clubs) affiliated, so members of affiliated running clubs can enter for £12 ahead of the day (or £10 on the day), too.
Nicole added, “At the end of the race, competitors will also be spoilt rotten, as we have
- A Free pint from the Sharps bar for the over 18’s
- A Goody bag
- A Sports massage
- A commemorative medal
- A pasty from Rowes
The first 200 runners to register will also get a limited edition Runway Runaround T-shirt.”
Cornwall Air Ambulance have had great support from Newquay Airport and Cornwall Council on this event and also from Sharps, Rowes, Personal Best Running, In Safe Hands, Glendorgal Hotel and Atlantic FM. This is a truly once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in a great event, so if you are interested and would like a registration form please get in touch with us at Charity HQ on 01726 890444, visit the website or your local Cornwall Air Ambulance charity shop.
And, of course, Roseland Online will keep a record of all you've raised on our new Charity Page. Just let us know your successes!
SCC Hits the Small Screen
02.01.12: A new TV series presented by actress/comedian Caroline Quentin starting this evening on ITV will feature two South Central Cornwall businesses. The programme entitled 'Cornwall' has been filmed over the summer of 2011 at both Treloan Holiday campsite, 'Arthur's Field', in Gerrans and at 'The Hidden Hut' on Porthcurnick beach, Portscatho.
Jemma Glass, propietor of the 'Hidden Hut' told Roseland Online, "We found the whole experience really good fun, albeit slightly daunting. Caroline and the camera crew were lovely and did their best to put us at ease during the filming. However, it's difficult to get your head around the possibility that millions of strangers will be watching and judging you!"
Jemma, and her partner, Simon Stallard, took over the Hidden Hut just last summer, so theirs was a baptism of fire having the film crew there during their first year.
Jemma continued, "The show is being aired during prime time national TV, in the Corrie slot! So that in itself is quite scary. We just hope it helps promote The Hidden Hut and the Roseland Peninsula as nice places to visit."
Pete and Debbie Walker at Treloan are excited by the idea of how the show will look, too. Both have yet to see any episodes, so this will be the first time they'll see themselves on TV, so it's both daunting and exciting for them both as well.
Debbie told us they had a phone call from the production team to say they would be in from episode 4, but Jemma and Simon missed their call whilst away on a well earned break, but believe themselves to be in episode 3 at first.
Many Roseland residents and visitors will no doubt be watching, hoping to see themselves on camera during the many events both locations put on over the summer and we're all hopeful that this programme will give both South Central Cornwall and Cornwall in general a boost to summer trade for 2012.
The eight episode show will be on at 8.00pm each Monday evening on ITV from this evening. More detials can be found by clicking here. |
