Fal RIver Links Co-op lanuches Oyster Card

Fal River Links Co Operative is launching the Fal Oyster Card from this May. Locals and visitors will be able to purchase one of two types of smart card:

Fal Oyster Card will be for transport only including Western Greyhound and First Bus services on the Roseland and between Truro and Falmouth, First Great Western Falmouth to Truro Branch Line, and the main ferry services. The smart cards will be valid from 1 day to 1 month, working on the basis that the more you travel, the better value you'll get for your journeys. Payment is taken once and you can travel as often as you like on any of the routes that are linked to Fal River Links. http://www.falriverlinks.co.uk/html/map.php (the map is last years and new routes will be added this year)

Fal Oyster Card Plus will include all of the above plus give discounted entry to local attractions and allow membership of the Falmouth Shopper Card scheme, it is planned to run a similar link with Truro and Roseland shops, galleries and places to eat. So if you run a shop, gallery or place to eat on the Roseland, please contact Beverley at King Harry for more information: beverley@kingharry.net.

Tim Light said, "In simple terms it is hoped that the Fal Oyster Card will be a triple win scenario for everyone. 1More use of public transport through providing greater value and easier access through understandable and linked timetables, which equates to more people using the facilities. 2 – Less congestion and emissions and visitors can enjoy good value days out without their cars. 3 – Encourage visitors and locals to shop locally through benefits linked to getting to the villages/town/city using public transport."

Roseland Community College Tops the Leagues!

A big Roseland Online CONGRATULATION goes out to the staff and students of Roseland Community College for reaching the top of the government’s league tables in Cornwall for a state school. With 65% of its students getting A* - C grades they beat the next highest, Penair, by 2% and Helston college by a whopping 6%.

In an interview, head teacher, Mrs Black said: "We are absolutely delighted. Particularly pleasing is the fact that all our students achieved or exceeded their potential. These are the best results our college has ever received."

She added; "Our boys did particularly well in relation to their peers nationally, as they slightly outperformed the girls on all measures and both groups did brilliantly."

Roseland fundraiser raises cash for charity

A local fundraiser has raised over a thousand pounds for charity after a memorial gig on the Roseland.

The event, a concert held in memory of Thirza Whittall, took place in the Portscatho Social Club and raised a total of £1650 for Thirza’s favourite charities - including the RNLI and Cornwall Air Ambulance.

One of the organisers said; “The initiative was an enormous success and there was a fantastic turnout from the locals. Of couse, it was an emotional evening, but it never fails to astound me how generous people can be on the Roseland".

New Folk Venue for Roseland

There should be no shortage of music on the Roseland this winter – not if the Roseland Inn has its way.

Located in Philleigh, this traditional pub, has just announced ‘Philleigh Folk’, a series of live gigs, kicking off on November 11th with folk duo Corncrow. Made up of Kim Guy on guitar & vocals (known for her work with “Elowen”) and Steve Hunt (dulcimer, bouzouki, guitar and vocals), the group is a stalwart of Liskeard folk club and the Cornish folk scene in general. They will be supported by local shanty group, Du Hag Owr (Admission is £5).

A second evening is planned for December when the guests will be the nominees for the ”Young Musicians of the Year” Award, the Carrivick Sisters.

Organiser Greg Williams said “I hope these evenings will be successful. If they are we’ll continue them on a monthly basis”.
