The Wave Hub Installation
Roseland resident, Chris Vandome, is overseeing a major new environmental project – The Wave Hub Installation. Exclusively here; Chris gives Roseland Online readers an interview about this important undertaking.
“The Wave Hub Installation is a government sponsored project to encourage the development of wave energy. The South West of England Regional Development Agency is developing the system. Put simply, the system that is about to be installed is 25 Km of 33KV rated armoured subsea power cable with a large termination box which then has 4 cables of just under 300m for connecting to the developers' equipment. Each of these cables has a plug fitted to connect to the various test pieces. The cable will be laid out from Hayle, to a site set aside for the development of the wave generators. Developers will be able to plug their test generators into the system and carry out their trials. Initially the system is intended to generate about 20MW of power which is enough for a small village, but with built in redundancy, the system could be expanded to supply 50MW.
“The whole project has required an amazing amount of forethought and a considerable amount of planning.
“The mobilisation has been completed and the cable and hub have been loaded onto the back of the Nordica - a Swedish vessel which is used for ice breaking - and there are approx 1300 tonnes of cable involved. The vessel is presently on passage to Tees Port to load bunkers and will then proceed down to Cornwall to start the installation.
“To monitor what is happening on the seabed a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) has been mobilised onto the vessel. The ROV is configured with various types of survey equipment that will allow it to accurately map the seabed, locate any obstructions on the proposed route and accurately plot the as laid position of the cable during the lay. Once the route survey is complete the vessel will move into position to start the shore pull in. The cable will be pulled from the shore and held off the seabed by floatation, approx 2km offshore.
“Local people are also taking part in the operation. The job of making sure that all non-essential craft are clear of the operation has been given to the local jet-ski club, while the beach is being patrolled by the local life guards.
“Weather permitting the operation will be starting on 2nd August... watch this space!”
We will keep track of Chris’ important work and give regular updates. As Chris says... watch this space!
Council Sponsored Compost Bins Available
Compost bins, which will help to drastically reduce household waste, are now available at cost price from Cornwall Council. The council is offering residents in Cornwall the chance to buy a range of compost equipment at prices far lower than in a High street store. To celebrate the arrival of the latest compost equipment, the Council is giving away ten bins for free in the first fortnight to people placing orders either by telephone or online. Compost bins can bio-degrade a wide range of materials from vegetable peelings and garden waste to old clothes made of natural materials.
Residents in Cornwall will now be able to take advantage of low prices such as £14 for a 220 litre compost bin and £17 for a 330 litre compost bin. There is also an introductory offer of buying any two bins and getting the second one half price.
Julian German, Cornwall Council cabinet member for Waste Management and Roseland Councillor, said: “Composting is an incredibly simple way of turning some of your household waste into a nutrient rich food for your garden. It helps reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill which saves money for everyone in Cornwall and is better for the environment.”
All of the compost bins are made from 100% recycled plastic and guaranteed for ten years. The equipment is produced under a national partnership which means that the scheme is cost neutral. Compost bins are capable of taking materials such as pet’s bedding, shredded paper, cardboard, clothing made of natural fibres as well as garden waste and vegetable peelings.
To make an order and have a chance of winning a free compost bin people should go online at www.cornwall.getcomposting.com or call 0844 571 4444 and quote reference: COR001L.
Jollity Farm Hit by Storms
Jollity Farm, a favorite animal sanctuary in Gerrans has once again been struck by disaster. Having recently been evicted from their plot by Enys Estates, they have had to downsize - relocating many animals to other sanctuarys - before relocating, at much cost to themselves, only to find their new location hit by the recent storms.
Luckily, the security fences they used as temporary enclosures, saved the animals from being crushed by the trees, which were brought down by the heavy winds on Thursday night, but they now face the huge cost of a time-consuming clean-up.
Their tree surgeon, Conrad, is already trying all he can to repair the damage, but Jollity farm are asking anyone who maybe has a couple of hours to spare, to offer to roll up their sleeves get involved.
Alternatively, if you would like to donate a small sum to help their exstensive costs, please contact Mary & Chris Pollard on 01872 580429, or email them at: justnicephotos.gerrans@virgin.net.

St Just Church Appeal

The last inspection of the St Just In Roseland Church in January 2010 raised serious concerns on the state of the roof and stated that plans must be put in hand immediately to replace it. English Heritage was approached but calls for a grant were unsuccessful.
Due to this, a Fundraising committee was established in late April 2010 and plans for a £350,000 appeal to replace the roof either in stages or all at once, were put into motion.
35,000 slates are needed, so the committee is asking people to kindly sponsor a slate at £10 each. If you would like to donate even a small part, please follow this link:
www.justgiving.com/stjustinroselandchurch
Names of all sponsors will be recorded in a book, which will be kept in the Church and will be available on request for everyone to read.
Events in and around the Roseland will begin with the official launch of the fund on Saturday 17th July at 7.30 at St Mawes Memorial Hall with a basket supper and concert by the Tresillian Singers, joined by Strike Sound.

Suprplus Veg? New SwapShop opens for business on the Roseland
Got a glut of new potatoes, lettuce or gooseberries? Finding it hard to come up with new ways of cooking all those courgettes? Roseland Inn Farm Shop is inviting green-fingered locals to help keep the shop stocked with fresh, local produce.
Amanda Harley, who has taken over the shop in Philleigh from Debbie Heslip, is maintaining the shop’s ethos of buying in products from Cornwall. Everything from the milk to the chocolate and crafts are sourced from across the county. As well as ordering from regular suppliers, Amanda also takes stock from small local farmers and visits Truro market twice a week for fresh fruit and vegetables.
To cut down even further on food miles, and make the most of what’s grown right here on the doorstep, Amanda is encouraging local gardeners who grown their own to bring in any surplus from gardens or allotments.
“I’m hoping that people, who might have a glut of lettuce or spinach in their garden, will bag it up and bring it into the shop to sell, or exchange for something else such as a jar of jam, a bunch of fresh cut flowers or some strawberries.”
Amanda hopes to buy fruit or vegetables suitable for sale in the shop at a set price per kilo, bunch or bundle and sell on everything a set price. She was inspired to try selling surplus fruit and vegetables from local producers after reading about a venture called Local Rootsand Wellie Boots in Eastbourne, Sussex.
Surplus crops and cut flowers will be paid for in cash (if it’s from a private garden) or with tokens for allotment holders (who are not allowed to profit from their allotments. These can then be exchanged for other fruit and veg, or jams and other produce.
She hopes that the informal arrangement will help keep the shop stocked up with fresh, affordable, locally-grown fruit and vegetables.
Local producers of jam, pickles, chutneys as well as arts and crafts are also invited to get in touch if they would like to sell their products.
As well as running the farm shop, Amanda plans to set up a holiday hamper delivery service, both for holiday makers to order ahead, but also for cottage and home owner who provide their guests with welcome packs. For more information about the farm shop, or to order a hamper, visit; www.roselandfarmshop.co.uk, or call Amanda on 07703 312 294.
An Important Police announcement:
This message relates to Police log 653 24 June 2010.
We would like to make you aware that we have had reports of two males trying to change money for various denominations and trying to confuse staff into giving them excess change in various businesses in West Cornwall.
They have purchased a small item with a £50 note and asked for various change, such as all £5 notes, then they try and confuse the cashier by offering the correct money they find on themselves and take back the note and also end up taking the change from the note.
It may not be obvious at the time but later when tills are checked it is noticed that money is missing.
Please be wary of people asking to change money, especially if attempts are made to confuse staff members.
If you have believe you have these males attempting this scam please phone 999. If possible please take a note of descriptions and vehicles.
Thank you for your co-operation.

Roseland Resident - An Air Ambulance's Volunteer's Story
In this month's Air Ambulance (one of Roseland Online's favorite charities) magazine, Roseland resident and Air Ambulance volunteer, Alan January, expalins the reasons he does the hard work he does for the charity for over 20 years now:
"It all started when Norman Way and Bill Pearce, whom I knew from their days at Plymouth Argyle's commercial department, asked my mother Joan if she would be happy to sell scratch cards to help fund the new and First Air Ambulance here in Cornwall. My mother accepted right away because, like me and her brother Ken and most other people, we all thought it was a good thing to have here in Cornwall due to the remoteness of some places and the amount of traffic on our roads. So with Ken and me helping her, she sold many cards.
"When the National Lottery was launched it hit sales of the instant scratch cards with sales plummeting. So when the current Air Care Lottery took its place my mother became an agent with me driving around the village picking up members' money for those she didn't see as she couldn't drive. My uncle Ken also recruited members on her behalf and collected their money. When my mother died of a stroke in 2006 I continued with the volunteering for the Air Care Lottery as I am very much a believer in the service.
"Around the late 1980s early T5 my mother asked if I would help in setting up a coffee morning in our local hall with her and it started off in the small room near the road. We were surprised by the amount of support we received and, within a year or two, we moved to the main hall as it had become a regular and much larger event.
"During the October half term, 2005, we raised more than £700 and we were delighted.
"In 2007 the Royal Standard pub, in Gerrans, started an Air Ambulance agency and I now collect their money as I am a courier for the Air Care Lottery. They also wanted to run a fundraising event and I was asked if I would like to be involved. Of course I said "yes." This year will be the third time the Standard has run such an event and it will be taking place on 15th August. There will be live music, stalls and plenty of food plus some goods from the Cornwall Air Ambulance on sale as well as the Air Care Lottery stand where I'm hoping to sign up a few more people!
"The event will take place in the royal Standard's lovely beer garden with children and dogs welcome! Look on the Royal Standard's website www.royalstandard-gerrans.co.uk and also Roseland-online.co.uk where details can be found.
That’s my story. I can only say I hope anyone reading this will think about becoming a volunteer and help with fundraising in some way, no matter how small, and keep this much needed service going."
Alan also gives guided walks of the Roseland and his contact details can be found in his services page block ad. Roseland-Online would also like to extend our thanks to Alan for the generous donation of time he has given to this worthwhile cause.
To make a donation to Cornwall Air Ambulace, follow this link. The Air ambulance will also be holding a Charity Summer Ball at the Esplenade Beach Hotel on Saturday 10th July at 7.30pm. To book your ticket, please email Jo Ramsden (Events Manager) or alternatively call on 01637 852 221.
Police Launch Community Messaging Service
RESIDENTS are being encouraged to sign up to a police messaging system to help the fight against crime. Community Messaging enables police to pass on crime warnings, appeal for help with an offence that has happened or update people on policing initiatives and successes.
Messages can be received by email, phone or letter and you can give a preferred time for police to get in touch. Thousands of people are already signed up to the scheme across the Force area. Over the past year, local people have received alerts on a wide range of issues from bogus callers and scams to missing children and house burglaries, as well as urgent warnings like potential flooding.
A police spokesman said: "Community Messaging helps to improve communication between the police and residents and is a great tool for helping us prevent and detect crime." The service is free and very simple to join.
What is community messaging?
Community messaging is a targeted messaging service that allows us to contact subscribers with a message to help prevent or solve a crime in your local area. Community messaging also allows you to find out about your next community meeting (PACT), what your local police are doing about issues affecting your area, as well as local crime statistics and trends.
You can choose to receive messages by faxed letter, phone or email. Information from the public is their best weapon in the fight against crime. Many crimes have been solved because people have responded to police appeals for information.
They have asked for your help to make your community a safer place. By taking a few moments to fill out a simple form you can help to drive down crime.
The Online Form
The first part of the form asks for personal information. The second part asks which watch schemes you belong to, if any and in the third section they will ask you when best they can contact you.
You can sign up to this new scheme by clicking here.

New Youth Club to Launch at Portscatho Harbour Club
Gerrans Parish Youth Club launches Friday 30th April at Portscatho Harbour Club. The club is aimed at children from 11 (who are in their last term of junior school) up to 16 year olds and will open for anyone on the Roseland every Friday night between 6.00 and 8.00pm during term time.
"There has been a great response to this idea and a desparate need for it," said organiser Debbie Walker. "We also would like to hear from parents who expressed an interest to run their own Youth Club for the under 11s."
There will be a nominal charge for entry each week, but this won't be high and is only there to help the Youth Club remain sustainable.
For more information, or to volunteer as a helper, email us and we'll make sure your questions are answered. "We hope everyone will support this initiative," said Debbie, "it's the only way we can support the Roseland kids and give them something positive to do whilst helping them interract with one another at least once a week."
